Actually I should rephrase this:  are there any modern horror films that have more going for them than cheap scares?  I've only seen a few in my lifetime that do, and those would be The Thing, The Shining, The Mist (The, The, The...), Alien, and Candyman.  Those are about the only movies in the horror genre that ever sparked my interest.  I realize there's an entire camp horror following out there, but I don't really buy that.  I do like some of the cheesy Stephen King movies (as in The Mist) for their odd and kitschy characters in these intense psychologically terrifying situations.  I might need to look into that whole library of movies.

Well there's The Exorcist.

And I'd still recommend the first Evil Dead (it's more straightforward, less camp).

True, Audition is like the definition of the build-up suspense kind of horror.

I started watching the Saw series of films over the past few days because I never saw them. I really enjoyed the first one so I had to watch them all. I only have Saw VI to get through and then Saw 3D which I plan on going to the movies to see next week. I'm not really into films with gore but the character of John Kramer had me intrigued and I like the style in which these movies were filmed (really awesome scene transitions).

If I had to rate that ones I've seen so far I'd put then in this order:
I > IV > III > II > V

Saw V was the only one that didn't really cause my jaw to drop at the end, unlike the other ones (I and IV were the best at doing this. I was so stunned at how they ended). The one thing I wish is that they would have kept the films more psychological and thrilling instead of just going for gore and grossing people out. That's what made Saw I the best.

the mist, it ended a few mins ago on tv.

didn't watch from the beginning, but shit this is a fucked up movie. it's the typical monsters enter real world cliche shit, but still scary as hell. i dunno if it was a good or bad movie i thought it was really depressing especially when they stabbed that army guy and threw him outside. and then at the very end the guy shoots his own damn son because they all think there's no hope and otherwise they would be torn to shreds eventually. and the army comes in with flamethrowers and tanks and rescues everyone. damn that is so fucked up.

but yeah i hate horror movies but when i saw this on tv i had to keep watching. really not my type of movies though especially monster movies

Sex Drive, Role Models, Se7en.

All since my last post, all for the first time.

Sex Drive and Role Models were OK. Both had a few stupid laughs.

Se7en was really really good. I should have watched it a long time ago.

Star Wars V.... I know this is gonna spawn a lot of hate but these movies are so boring compared to the prequel trilogy. All the time it's just Luke, Han, and Leia VS Darth Vader. It gets so boring, and I miss the Jedi Council. Luke was supposed to be a Jedi since IV, yet he only uses his lightsaber against Vader for everything else he uses a blaster. Yoda is a crazed green midget instead of a Jedi master.

It doesn't help that the special effects are ugly, though reasonable for the time in which it was released. And Chewbacca is annoying.

Just watched a film called Exam. It's about 8 candidates that are put into a room to answer a question that will give them a job working for a prestigious company, except that each of their exams are blank! They are told a bunch of rules at the outset and that they will be disqualified if they break any of them, and they have only 80 minutes to figure out the answer. Pretty great film actually, given that it all takes place in one set with zero special effects. It's all psychology and I enjoyed it. Kind of like Cube minus the gore.

Oh come on he got his lightsaber in movie IV and Obi Wan instructed him a little. Maybe he was not a full Jedi Knight or even padawan level, but at least he started going down that path.

Anyway especially Return of the Jedi is false to its name. It's not the return of the Jedi it's just the fall of the Empire. The only "Jedi" alive is Luke.

I guess the fact I saw the prequel before the originals also plays a part though. The original trilogy was in the theatre before I was born, and I watched the prequels first. I guess that makes me a bit biased, but it's still stunning how Luke and Han hog all the action. In the prequels sure Qui Gon, Obi-Wan and Anakin hogged a lot of the action but the other Jedi fought along as well, even more infamous Jedi such as Kit Fisto.
