Uhhhhh I think you already know this and are ranting about how dumb it is in reality, but in case you don't know, High School football actually means a great deal in the Southern/Texas local culture. Making a show about it is like a cop show over dramatizing police work in the sense that there is some basic level of excitement and the it tries to funnel all the excitement to one team/one set of cops. But king of the hill is making fun of this culture and friday night lights, varsity blues and remember the titans are all embracing it.

no of course i know this.  it's based on reality, i am aware.  i'm saying it's a dumb setting not because it's unrealistic or lacks believability but because it's really sad and pathetic how much of themselves these people invest in fucking high school football.  it's gross!  just because it exists does not mean you should use it as a setting.  i am sure somewhere in the deep south they pine for the old days when niggers didn't dine in the same restaurants and i wouldn't want to see a town like that used as a setting for a television show either.  it's a bad setting because it's already really dumb when it happens in reality and making a show about it is even worse.

but the melodrama comment i made wasn't even referring to the football thing at all.  i don't think it's very melodramatic on that front; mostly it's just that the town cares too much.  it's almost presented as a foregone conclusion.  although one time some guy threw a brick through a window so idk.  but yeah the melodrama comes from TEEN ROMANCE 95% of the time and this is intolerable and has nothing to do with fucked up texas culture.

What? why is it a dumb setting? because they love it? football is an awsome sport and of course you have extreme people in anything. Man your  comment hurts my brain. it's dumb because people invest themselves into something they love? I understand people who go too far, yes but that isn't exlcusive to football or the texas football setting.

man I dunno how to even go into this.

TEEN drama? what the hell, you want them to ignore their personal lives? they are TEENS, were you expecting some other type of drama from tv show based on....teens. and compared to teen based drama shows like "One tree hill" this drama doesn't even reach 1% to me. give me an example of how they go over the top with the teen drama, I can't think of anything at all.

he said its dumb because its fucking highschool football and real adults wouldn't invest so much time and interest into it.

But really I live in the south and we've got a pretty big highschool football following around here. From students and their friends parents to older people that just go to watch the game or because they know someone on the team or at the school. So it is pretty big. Up to a few thousand people going to see a game sometimes I think (especially rivalries).

So I'd understand people not having sons/daughters on the team being interested by it or some shit but I don't watch this show and haven't seen it so I wouldn't know what exactly you're talking about when you mention people obsessing about it.

But apparently they do...I remember reading a lot of articles on friday night lights (the movie) they realy did (at least back in the day) close down stores for friday night games. They really did take it that serousley in a lot of areas.

That's not dumb. It's just not something YOU wouldn't do. Why is it dumb to invest into high school football? If you love football like some towns do, you can't go to college games because you might not have a college in your town, you can't go to NFL games because the NFL is expensive and spread across the nation.

High school football is local, and you can par ticpate in it by donating your time and money. If you love football it's just logical to want to be around it.

And not to mention in the towns like that everyone played football , and as a former player in football, basketball, and many other sports I defiantly relate and respect to going back  your team and helping out the new generation by supporting them and going to games.

Again some people take it to far, but that not exclusive to football.

HECK I bet half of the nations high school football teams wouldn't exist if it wasn't from adult donations and support who GO to their games and PAY for the gear. And those same people who donate most likely played football at that school and have an attachment to it.

I'm sorry, but it's a far cry from dumb.

i think the flaw in your argument is that you are ignoring the fundamental fact that football itself is dumb

Does any other sport have as much DOWN TIME as football??? That's what makes it so annoying for me to watch... let alone watch a show based around it. Even football movies I find annoying. They're always the same plot too.

the football games are actually by a wide margin the best part of the show.  there's no downtime and they're kind of exciting/interesting.  i don't know dick about football tho so maybe that's why

I imagine the worst part of Friday Night Lights is that it's about high school football and comes on Friday nights. That seems like bad business sense.

btw: nothing makes you look more like a childish nationalist fuckwit than insisting american football is not a sport or somehow less deserving of attention.

heh you know what's a REAL game? fucking cricket and hockey.

all sports are kind of dumb and being like "there's breaks in football" is probably more of an issue for you than it is the sport itself. acting like friday night lights would be better or worse if it was about basketball or something else instead is pretty dumb.

basically there are few objective measures of sports but imho if there is one (as far as spectators go) it goes

team sports>individual sports>mechanical sports

so baseball/football/cricket/rugby imho are more fun to casually watch than tennis/track/boxing which are more fun than racecars. I base this only on the theory that the most enjoyable part of sports is watching someone achieve something with a physical grace and prowess we don't see normally and you have more of a chance to see this happen if there are more players on the field, and that nascar doesn't demonstrate as much "artistry" as the others.

and that's still a bullshit measure as I'd rather watch boxing than any of the others so basically I think you can be invested in a sport so you might be more interested but being all HEH AMERICAN FOOTBALL??? while extolling some other sport over it just shows you're being dumb.

there's no objective SPORTS QUALITY okay. if you do not like football it is probably because...you do not like football! do not look for an objective measure as to why!
