oh that's right every Simpsons episode is based on something

when I was like 5 I thought the writers were like complete geniuses

I couldn't believe that one time they did a RUN LOLA RUN episode

I'm talking about the ep where lisa had that grammar robot and was trying to get to the competition and it was shown from 3 different viewpoints (I guess that part could be Run Lola Run too) but they even had the exact same crappy german techno music when she was running which was mindfuck for me because I actually saw the movie later

or did you mean 'oh wow there was a run lola run parody'

also is Worker and Parasite based on anything in particular like Nu, Pogodi is the only Russian cartoon I really know (I sampled it once) and it also kind of seemed like Soviet version of Tom and Jerry

yeah it's run lola run. but there's also a logan's run dream sequence in an older ep so I got confused as I didn't know the Run Lola Run parody.

Just want to say thanks you guys for bringing up some films I don't know of and in the case of some, wanted to see but forgot and never got around to seeing.

and the reason I didn't really didn't want lists was because feeling emotional is usually a personal emotion and it's nice to know WHY it's depressing for someone, even if it's only a hint at why.

how's your valve ignatius?

'ard as nails! I haven't chucked-up in over four years! That said, the aforementioned scene in Revolutionary Road was putting it through its paces.

And how come no-one's mentioned The Green Mile yet? I refuse to watch it from start to finish, for the simple reason that I know my ducts'll stream 'til they're completely parched come the closing credits.

Also, speaking of Stephen King adaptations...

There's The Mist, of which I've only seen the monster scenes and the ending (at the time it didn't look as though it would get a release here in the UK). I mean c'mon, Whoever wrote that ending (King, Darabont or a third party screenwriter) is one sadistic bastard.

It had rather the same effect on me as Oldboy's ending. Which reminds me, I should revisit the Vengeance Trilogy soon.

The Mist is an awful suggestion for a "depressing movie". Seriously, the whole ending just seems so tacked on and out of place.

Vengeance Trilogy, I recommend it, personally I found the first one, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance the most realistic and depressing one.

Weird I just saw luck of the fryish last night. In a weird way it is a tragic episode, if only for futurama

Man, I never cry for like tv or movies or anything, but both of these episodes made me cry the first time I saw them! Now the breakfast club song is like the saddest thing in the world to me.

fyi both of those episodes are what I was referring to. they deliberately pull at your heartstrings during the whole thing and while it was sad, it was also fuckin MAUDLIN if that makes sense.

oh well doooont feel like explaining.

not specifically replying to futurama post. I don't think pink's looking for movies that will make him cry, but I haven't seen any of the movies he mentioned so I can't tell for sure. there is a big difference tho, for instance Dear Zachary (depressing) kinda made me feel like shit while Cat Soup always makes me cry but isn't depressing at all. makes me cry can be pretty much anything

so I thought maybe I'd have some recommendations but nop. dear zachary I guess!! I don't really watch many things that are actually depressing unless I feel there's something else that makes it worth it. do you guys find vertigo depressing? I guess it is but I don't think that's what you're looking for. someone could mention like ERASERHEAD but while that is a depressing it's also a lot of other things. *edit* both of those are supposed to be Required Viewing tho which is why they came to mind

Most of the depressing films I've watched are horror/crime related films :/  So, I'm not sure if this is the kind of depressing that you want but I'll give the names anyway.

- Se7en : Yeah, the ending made me depress for a few days. I doubt no one here has never seen this though :/

- The Girl Next Door : This one is based on a true crime about a girl being tortured to her death by her stepmother and the kids from the neighbourhoods. It's really brutal and very hard to watch.

- Eden Lake : A horror movie about a couple on their honeymoon trip but ended up pissed some kids around there off. The kids were really scary in the movie, and not in the "children of the corn" kind of way.

If Seven counts as a depressing movie, I would suggest The Mist, because the ending is so amazingly sad.

Rome: Open City is pretty depressing. It's set in Rome during the German occupation in WWII, and it was actually filmed not long after the war so the scenes on the city streets are the real life, actual bombed out streets of Rome. While the story is predictable, you can actually feel the emotional intensity behind it.

It's not about the Holocaust.
