I was watching it... and I didn't have a clue as to what was going on.  The camera kept cutting away, then there was some action, then cut away, then more action...

I mean, it showed the battle system, but it really didn't.  It just showed people beating the shit out of robots with blue option boxes on the screen.  That didn't really suggest anything about how this game actually plays.

This just looks like a really shitty (I.E. normal) anime.  But honestly, it's hard to have an opinion because the trailer showed absolutely nothing telling of the game.  I just saw a lot of trains (I think) and people fighting with no regard to the laws of physics.

FF12 was fun, but I was horribly disappointed when it turned out the airship battles were only in cutscenes, and not at all part of the gameplay.  Until the FF series decides to finally include interactive airship battles, I don't have much interest in playing another one.

Now this is a little odd, I always thought that FF6 was still widely bandwagoned accepted was one of the good Final Fantasy games. When did this "six sucks too" become the normal?
When hating seven and up became lame and not edgy enough.

The trailer just showed all the cool stuff that happens while you're in Midgar (it's a Cocoon I think someone said in it) and not anything that happens outside of Midgar/cocoon. Uhm, same shit as FF7. You leave Cocoon and you enter a germanesque country bumpkin world and save the world from another silverhaired fool. That's my prediction.
The difference is that back when I saw FF7's misleading trailer I pissed myself. This time I sighed.

I enjoyed most FF games before X, I was around 13-15 when I played most of them, but they definitely haven't aged well. I just picked up the FFIV remake for DS though hopefully that's good, III was ok but not exactly incredible (good for when I was taking 8 hour train journeys though).

FF Tactics is one of my favourite games though. Anyone played the DS one yet? It's supposed to be a sequel to the GBA one I heard, which I still enjoyed even though a lot of things let it down considerably. I have high hopes, so I might get it. The PSP one (war of the lions???) was good imo.

As for topic at hand I can't even watch movies on the oil rig (lol) but I really lost interest in the "main" series past X a long time ago. So I'm not expecting much when I do get round to watching it.

FF4 remake is pretty sweet.

This feels way more over the top anime-ish than the previous ones, I don't think it's a good thing.
My feelings are mixed, I had high hopes in XII because I loved both FFT and Vagrant Story but that last minute child hero insert was a punch to the face to everyone who actually liked the Ivalice franchise. This also reeks of crowd pleasing, but I'm still waiting for it.

I've zero expectations for this. The series has become gradually worse over the years, FFIX being the last good one. I think this is going to be the same crap FFX was.

I doubt it will worse than ffx only because this time the protagonist that look like a girl is in fact a girl.

yeah that's what it is; edginess. it can't just be the fact that these games legitimately blow.

Yeah really, I think it's more the fact that no one would admit that they were pretty bad before due to CHILDHOOD MEMORIES of them, not that they were such great games.

I played FF7 last summer to see if I would still enjoy it despite my hatred for Japanese RPGs.  I have to admit that I had a blast playing it.  Part of it was definitely nostalgia, but the other part was that it was actually fun to play.  I also had absolutely nothing to do since I didn't have Internet access and I was only taking two classes that required no homework, so maybe it was all relative.

I think FF7 was on the verge of being an ultra-shitty-Japanese RPG, but managed to maintain some semblance of down-to-earth-ness.  That's what made the Advent Children movie so confusing though.  Why were they fighting like anime characters?  They never did anything like that in the game.  They just ran up to their enemies, swung their weapons, and that was that.

I'm really sick of how the Japanese think swinging a sword THROUGH a bad guy will only give him a minor scratch, and that's if it manages to be more painful than "pissing them off."  When I land a blow with a sword (or another devastating weapon), I want to severely damage my enemy.  You know, like it would even in another universe where the laws of physics don't really apply.

I can accept jumping ten miles into the air (low gravity), magic (poor understanding of physics), and huge, unrealistic weapons (low gravity again), but when an object wedges through another object, I want some kind of realism.

there's always Bushido Blade

but yeah that's still really dumb

also like I dunno I agree with xanqui that you know maybe part of it's that the old games are nostalgic but also maybe some of them I dunno were actually designed better as far as being actual games that you play, maybe it's something really subtle like how one song can be really groovy and another seems similar but it's just not appealing at all

also it's not like we're saying all old RPGs were good - oh yeah Lagoon that was an awesome game, Tecmo's Secret of the Stars good times there

also about all games being anime now when I was like 9 or whatever I actually got into anime exactly because I thought it would be like playing a game but being able to watch it too (they never made a real anime out of Chrono Trigger right? that blows)

also I think it's like yeah the way the characters attacked in the old final fantasys was really goofy so I dunno I think I would have a sense of humor to kind of laugh at that or think it looked kind of goofy back then or be like hey everybody looks like legomen when they fight - also I think the old games did kind of blow my mind but in an adventure sort of way, not like this is high drama greatest work mankind can ever achieve

Edit: Also I think all of us could relate to the people who designed the old final fantasy games a lot more as it was probably some programmer dudes in their garage (do japanese have garages) and like they were probably exactly like people making an RPG Maker game except probably w/ more knowledge of programming than a lot of people here, at least when they started. Now it feels like so much pretension like not only the anime parts it's like in the old Final Fantasy games they would just name bosses and summons after mythological creatures/gods from different religions but now it feels like maybe they do all this work behind the scenes doing research on old myths from different cultures and stuff (maybe not but it feels really pretentious like that)

Edit: I'm halfway serious like maybe when they started Final Fantasy it was mostly just taking ideas from anime and Tolkien but then they try to throw all this other stuff in there instead of just making a game assuming everybody else (collectively) really only knows anime and Tolkien for the most part

I don't know what to compare it to like Star Wars took a lot from the bible right and their audience probably all knew the bible collectively as a group and it would be not as relatable if they just included some other element that was completely off everyone's radar like folk tales from Laos or something

fyi in a universe with "low gravity" (xanqui this is still not physics at all as they still land with force etc) if a sword hit you there's more of a chance of it pushing you away than slicing you since you wouldn't be held to the earth as strongly fffff this isn't even physics does it really bother you that swords do not cut people in half in videogames.

don't you play STAR WARS games?

WITH LIGHTSABERS?

but really in general I just don't think we scrutinized it as much as kids but I think it /was/ legitimately more fun because we didn't think about it so damn much

like seriously I think if I asked myself as a kid why I liked Final Fantasy I wouldn't have any good reason but now we're trying to act like we had a reason

Edit: Either that or it's some stupid little thing like because they looked like little legomen when they were fighting and the numbers came out of the guys when they got hurt

All ff's except ff8 are unplayable. Kingdom Hearts is the bastard son of two people from marketing. The most fun FF game I've played in recent years is FF X-2 because it seemed to ignore all pretense and just take itself as a really stupid pointless game with no. If I had faith in the guys I'd have said it was a parody of how cliche and unplayable FFX was, but it's by SE so I know that's not the case.

FFs just don't stand up.

Apparently its not even cool anymore to enjoy Final Fantasy. I will always respect others' opinions, but for someone to say the whole series is trash, or only FF (insert number here) was good, is hard to believe. Personally speaking, I loved FFVIII. It seems to be a widely hated Final Fantasy, but it was unique, and had some interesting characters, and the first disc is amazing.

This new Final Fantasy, looks impressive. SE really appears to be busting their asses on this one. The battle system looks awesome to me, everyone likes to hate on big flashy animations though it seems.

why is it so hard to believe?
People have... standards and won't except their cliches, flat characters stupid storylines, unimaginative worlds and constant exposition... how dare they!?

It's pretty true. Most people aren't excited and have the audacity to criticize FF13 because Squenix has lost every little sense of originality and instead appeals to a certain fanbase. They dropped everyone else like a hat and that's the direction they went in. In a sea of shit it's pretty hard to find a decent RPG with an amazing storyline and characters that feel and act and breathe and don't just act based on a single personality aspect. I dunno. I don't play a lot of RPGs anymore unless it involves me amassing loads of money to blow on shiny shit I don't really need and having no idea where I'll end up because everything else where they try to make the story so amazing just fails horribly.

I don't know, maybe everyone won't give FF13 a chance because their hopes of it being any good have been shattered because of what they've already seen that just seems to be the same crap over and over again. We've pretty much had our expectations broken down. That's the reason people like me won't give FF13 a chance.

Fuck, at this point I'd rather play a Castlevania game just because at least I'd get some entertainment out of the fighting.
