i think kaworu has a point though btw. it's true that a lot of modern bands which are considered prog metal (mastodon, between the buried and me, textures, meshuggah, gojira, opeth....) have screaming/growling and it's pretty common for lots of avant-garde/prog metal bands. i still associate the word prog metal with bands like dream theater, queensryche, symphonyx, ayreon etc. but it's also true that lots of modern bands which are just kinda different from your usual metal are called prog metal and it's probably most fitting genre for them too. i still disagree with kaworu though, disillusion is far from your average prog metal band and i'm not even a fan or anything. i find the first album pretty good though.

i also think you people need to get over this lyric thing. music can be good without having intelligent lyrics! i almost never pay attention to lyrics in metal and even though overly cheesy lyrics can be distracting (power metals) i can enjoy good music. man sometimes lyrics can make little to no sense but they can still sound cool and vocals can add a lot to the music without you actually trying to make sense out of the lyrics. i dunno maybe it's just impossible for some people to enjoy music as simply music. there's more to music and vocals than lyrics. i'm not afraid to admit i might like good metal with awful lyrics more than some run-of-the-mill sounding indie with clearly better lyrics.

there is good metal. and this whole art argument is dumb as hell.

this is a pretty stupid argument imo I THINK IT SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD YOU DONT HAVE TO FIT ANY MELODY JUST kEEP PLAYING THESE CHORSD

if you don't care for lyrics then use your voice as an instrument but if you're actually formulating words and singing them they should atleast make sense

i think a lot of the problem is people think when we say BAD LYRICS we mean NOT GOOD. no. there are harmless lyrics. I think anyone who gets worked up over the lyrics in like Umbrella or something is being stupid as hell. oh no! kind of dumb lyrics! arrrrgh.

but then you have:

Quote
On a cold dark winter night hidden by the stormy light
A battle rages for the right for what will become
In the valley of the damned a warrior with sword in hand
Travels fast across the land for freedom he rides

this isn't even high school poetry this is some dude in a silk anime shirt scrawling something for his next DnD meeting's opening chant. this is REALLY QUITE AWFUL and it's intentional. like it is not "baby cause in the dark, you cant see shining stars, thats when you need me there, with you i'll always share" which is DUMB but it's not intentionally awful, it's just completely vague and a bit rolleyes. but this dude is seriously making music about fighting dragons.

just some lyric talk w. me and u.

all right hey here is an opinion on the art thing:

i think no one really cares about defining art but when people say "this lacks artistic merit" we know what they mean. the question is then less IS IT ART and more IS IT EVEN WORTHWHILE?

is this a completely subjective question? ehhhh I dunno. like on the one hand of course it is but on the other would a serious music listener ever attribute artistic merit to Creed? of course not.

the reason I think we talk about the artistic merit of Dragonforce or what not is less to prove it's "not art" or even that it's "not worth anything" but more that we don't understand why someone else doesn't agree. the more music you listen to, the more you tend to understand shit like "hey sperging out over Blink 182 being THE WORST BAND is pretty dumb" or "you know who gives a fuck that rap is about bitches and shit maybe life is a bit like that and if we were really committed to stopping it we'd actually stop actual degradation of women" and so when someone shows up and likes something you really think is pretty immature you want to, or at least OUGHT TO WANT TO engage them on some level that you can understand.

it is not surprising though that more often than not they refuse to and hide behind a shield of ITS MY OPINION

THERE'S NOTHING ITS BASED ON!!!

as the more you engage in musical discussion the more you tend to hear the music you're talking about and the more you tend to be pretty dismissive of it (it's gonna take a pretty solid argument to get me to really appreciate Nickelback in this day and age) and then some dude gets intimidated by you being kind of dismissive and runs away.

is metal art who really cares about this question. when someone says "metal lacks in artistic merit" they want you to say what the merit is, they aren't just making an overarching statement for the hell of it.

that being said shit like SOMETIMES METAL IS GOOD is kind of boring we all know there are exceptions to rules we want to know either 1. why the specific bands being mentioned blow so much or 2. what makes these exceptions good.

steel's right, yeah of course there's exceptions otherwise it wouldn't be a rule it would just be a fundamental. the idea of rules is that it is possible to break them!

I think you misunderstood what I said. I didn't mean that the lyrics couldn't make sense, the artist probably had some idea behind them but even so there probably isn't much to it and a lot of listeners probably just find it OKAY RANDOM LYRICS COOl and aren't bothered by it at all. This is the case with so many bands I couldn't even start listing them. And since you brought random lyrics up, I probably wouldn't be bothered by that as long as the lyrics don't distract me. I would prefer REAL WORDS to some random mumble jumble even if the lyrics don't necessary make any sense, it can still work well with the music. And Steel has a point, there are inoffensive lyrics and then there are clearly really awful lyrics but I don't think it's always possible to draw the line between the two since some people can stomach more than others. For example, I probably can tolerate way worse lyrics than Steel can because English isn't my native language and I doubt I pay as much attention to lyrics as he does. I appreciate good lyrics I can relate to or just think HEY THIS IS P.GOOD but lyrics are still almost always the last thing I pay attention to. Sometimes I listen to albums many times before I even start paying that extra attention to lyrics.

also as far as the whole art thing is concerned, i would consider any music which isn't made commercial success in mind art. like you make music for yourself and if others like it then that's cool. but you shouldn't make music to please others or to sell records. that's not art. that's merchandise. as for steel's artistic merit argument, i don't really have anything to say about that. if you weigh artistic merit in lyrics then yes finding artistic merit in metal will be difficult! i listen to metal because it has characteristics other genres don't. sometimes i like to listen to really heavy shit. i like the dynamics, i like the juxtaposition of heaviness and melody, i like some growling and screaming, and i like that mixed in with clean vocals, i like cool heavy riffs, i like lots of things metal has to offer.

i find a lot of metal uninteresting and boring and i don't just mean awful shit like slipknot, i just don't get (or care) a lot of metal which isn't even considered awful but even so i don't think metal is any worse than other genres. it's definitely not my favorite or most listened genre but i like metal and there is metal which isn't awful, i just don't dig it. to each his own. now i'm a boring person........

'Cos every metal band and every type of metal absolutely has screaming. Congrats!

Sure a lot of metal is cheesy but like others said, there's a crapload of non-cheesy metal and pretty much every type of music can be really cheesy. Anyways, I'll go back to Ahab.

I said most and I'm pretty sure earlier I recognized that there were talented metal bands out there that didn't do that
